I’ve shared my love and fascination with foreign markets with you before (here in Germany). If the opportunity presents itself, I
take drag whoever I’m with to visit them and I bring along my camera because there’s always something unique that catches my eye.
On a rainy Marbella day, bf and I took a 40 minute drive to the capital of the Costa del Sol, Málaga. We needed an excursion from experiencing 2 weeks of non-stop rain and, being indoors, the Málaga Atarazanas Market was perfect for such a day.

What was once a Moorish shipyard built in the 14th Century, is now a vibrant central market for the fortunate people of Málaga. The only structure salvaged from the original shipyard is the facade of one of the seven original horseshoe arches called “La Puerta de Atarazanas“.

The well-lit, clean and orderly aisles are organized by stands of fish & seafood, fruits & vegetables, and meats. You can also enjoy the bustling atmosphere at one of their popular tapas stands. You know where I’m going with this right?

I’m so predictable.
A woman can’t shop on an empty stomach…at least not this woman! Bf has learned this (clever man), so our first stop was a quick bite at one of their tapas bar inside Atarazanas.
We chose some plump fried sardines (you can see them being prepared above)…
…and fried fish along with a local cerveza (beer). Yes, I know, so much for heart-healthy.
Talk about hitting the spot. They were both delicious and when these stands are steps away from their suppliers, you can also imagine how fresh! This my kind of “fast food”.
Properly sated, I was ready to browse the market. We began down the aisle selling fish and seafood and weaved our way around…
As you can see, the choices are abundant and gorgeously merchandised. Most of the vendors were friendly and full of character, which makes this market 100% even better in my eyes.
On the right is Lomo de Bacalao or Dried Salted Cod.
Doesn’t this look like refreshing ice-cream or gelato? Well, look closer because before you is a selection of flavored L-A-R-D. Yup, that’s how they roll here (ha, get it, “roll”?!)
Large vats of Chorizo and Pork…in lard. Is it no wonder how some of their food is so ridiculously rich and flavorful?!
Enormous, local Boletus (porcinis) from the area of Ronda and Chirimoya fruit.
These were wispiest, longest, most elegant asparagus I’ve ever seen!
Local Malaga Higos (figs) and olives, a Spanish staple.
I love the Spanish ladies with their shopping carts, though some of them can be quite, um…assertive…so watch out!
When we left the indoor market, there was a man selling snails and olives on the sidewalk. Talk about fresh!
Then we walked a few blocks to the famous promenade, Calle Larios.
Even on this rainy day, people were strolling through this charming pedestrian-only area. The street is filled with shops, restaurants and bars and one particularly popular local confitería (café, tearoom, patisserie), Café Lepanto where we stopped for a sweet treat…or two…or three.
There’s something about sitting at an outdoor café, sipping coffee and people watching that turns a cold rainy day quite ideal.
